About
I am no more a student. My school and college days are over long ago. Learning gives happiness. Now I do not have obligation to get the pass mark. It adds more fun to learn. But I do not have enough earning to support learning from universities. With financial constraint in one side, another side is time constraint. Weeks days I have to do my regular job. This takes around 12-14 hours a day. Working days best place to learn some thing is train compartment or a bus, thanks to MOOC courses and smart phone. I download the courses from the sites at free of cost, transfer them in smartphone. Read freely in trains and buses. It seems everything is OK. But very few courses I am able to complete. What's the problem? One problem is I try so many courses at a time, that can not finish a single one. Usually I can complete one course at a time. Multi tasking is not suitable for me. How to do more than one courses at a time? Is it possible for me?

What I usually do in weekdays? What is my regular job? I do computer programming. That gives me money to survive and to dream. Bugs are like bag and baggage in my daily life. More quickly I can solve one,  greater relief I can enjoy. But this only happens in dream. Reality is different. Most of the time it is like searching needle in the Hay. Those frustrating days are tiring. Still there is some surprise waits for me. While I am returning, in the way, I am quiet far from the computer system, all of a sudden I get the idea about my mistake. It is quiet astonishing. Why this type of things so frequent to me? I checked with colleagues. They also informed me similar things happen to them also, for an example while smoking they got the idea. What it is the reason behind?

After trying several courses on-line, at last I found the course "Learning how to learn". I am here to get answers to all those questions.

  • How to do more than one course at a time?
  • How to learn rapidly and effectively?
  • Why do I get solution to my problem while I am not focused into it?
  • Life has time limit. Within this short span of time how much we can learn?
  • How to do self learning? When we can not afford university courses due to time and money?

How to do more than one course at a time?
Our brain feels discomfort while learning something totally new. Do not be frustrated. Just like whenever we start going to gym, we feel lot of difficulties (e.g. body ache etc.). During learning something new we build neural structures just as body builders are building their muscular structures. Starting too late forces us try to build neural networks in a hurry. This gives discomfort to our brains. As long as we keep going we get accustomed to it, we start enjoying. Learning new things is also similar. We need to give more attention to it. As soon as pass over the initial barrier we start keep enjoying the things. When we start enjoying the things we get motivated to go further. Keep going, keep learning and entertain ourselves.

I would like to try 25 minutes period of uninterrupted focus (Pomodoro technique) followed by a bit of relaxation (shift and narrow our focus of attention to something more enjoyable (reading discussion forum). For six days in a week like to follow a routine. Routine is to hardware my brain. Following routine will be comfortable to brain. And at least one day in a week, there will be no routine. Free flow to enjoy freedom and reduce the boringness. That day mostly for recall what I have learnt in last six days. Like to make my own story with the concepts I learn. Let's have some excitement and relief from sometimes boring reality (!!of not understanding anything!!).

Prioritise the courses, the course I need most, will get maximum attention. In the day of freedom (once in a week) try to learn something totally different and new. O brain some new food for you. Enjoy it.

Like to learn how to form neuro mini-chunk. Then link all the neuro mini-chunks to form large chunks. Create a garland of concepts by relating with each other.

It will be better if I am able to maintain a learning diary. Date wise maintain my learning experience including (main concepts (contexts), difficulties, hours spent in focused mode, hours spent in diffused mode, Happiest part of learning, most difficult part of learning).

After a long time, I can view my learning experience.

How to motivate?
Most of the neurons in our cortex carry information about what is happening around us and
what we are doing. Our brain also has a set of diffusely projecting systems of neuromodulators,
that carry information not about  the content of an experience but it's importance and value to your future, neuromodulators are chemicals that influence how a neurons responds to other neurons. Acetylcholine, dopamine and serotonin. Acetylcholine neurons form neuromodulatory connections to
the cortex that are particularly important for focused learning, when we are paying close attention. These acetylcholine neurons project widely and activate circuits that control synaptic plasticity.
Leading to new long term memory.  Neuromodulators also have a profound impact on your unconscious mind. One of the great brain discoveries in our lifetime has been that our
motivation is controlled by a particular chemical substance called Dopamine. Which is found in a small set of neurons. These dopamine neurons are part of a large brain system that controls reward learning and in particular in the basal ganglia. Dopamine is released from these neurons, when we receive an unexpected reward.

Loss of Dopamine neurons leads to a lack of motivation. And something called anhedonia, which is a loss of interest in things that once gave you pleasure. Severe loss of Dopamine neurons causes resting tremor, slowness, rigidity, this is called Parkinson's disease.

Knowing unknown things is another form of motivation.  Failures and new challenges to our limits. Take failures as learning lessons.

Avoid false learning
To avoid false learning, like to practice recall the key concepts. This way make a routine to check what I have learnt in a routine manner. This is also to facilitate transferring from working memory to long term memory.

Try to participate actively as it is better than passive listening. "Learn by doing" is a nice thing to know faster.

Auxiliary Activities
Physical exercises help in proper functioning of brain. Regular exercise (e.g. swimming) will also help to keep brain fresh and active. Time to time plan to visit some place never visited before.

Why do I get solution to my problems while I am not focused into it?
Science has shown that the brain has two fundamental modes of learning - focused and diffused. One is an active state of concentration, and the second involves a more relaxed state of mind. We are generally in either one state or other - in fact, being in one mode appears to block our access to to other mode! First focus on the problem, and then stop for a while do something totally different (e.g reading newspaper, surfing internet, have a walk). This permits the largely unconscious diffuse mode to kick in, which in turn allows our brain to examine fresh way. When we later return with your focused attention, we'll be surprised at how often the solution jumps quickly to our mind.

Never slip your sleep
Studies show that sleep can enhance memory and learning. How ? Often I felt tired solving a problem. After a nice sleep next morning the solution is so easy and it worked perfectly. Research shows that brain waves of different frequencies  during sleep help consolidate learning in one part to the brain while also building connection among different parts of the brain that improve learning.

Please do not disturb me if you find, I am sleeping during my regular office hours. Actually I am working in extended mode of finding solution of a critical problem. !!!

Sleep is natural way to reduce the toxic substances in brain. Sleep is like drainage system of brain. Never block it.

Surely this learning technique I will use most.

Special Learners
In my life I have seen people, who never attended even any school. But they learnt a lot from their surroundings. They can predict whether it will not rain or not, by watching the cloud. Most of the time they are accurate. They are very close to the nature, observe the things minutely and make their solid neural strucutre. Keep on learning through out the life. So always there is lot of things to learn from our surroundings. Observation, thinking make lot of differences. We always have our brain with us. We have to properly utilise it. Nature and life are the two great sources for learning.
